West Bengal’s industrial sector grew by 7.3% in FY2024-25, outpacing the national average and underscoring the need for power to sustain the state’s next phase of manufacturing and infrastructure-led growth. Recognising this opportunity, JSW Energy is developing the 3200 MW Salboni Thermal Power Plant to strengthen the state’s long-term energy security while supporting rising electricity demand.

Construction of the Salboni Thermal Power Plant marks one of JSW Energy’s most significant infrastructure investments in eastern India. The project forms part of JSW Energy’s broader expansion pipeline, with 13.5 GW of generation capacity currently under construction across thermal and renewable energy projects.

As one of eastern India’s largest upcoming thermal power projects, Salboni also demonstrates how JSW Energy is expanding power infrastructure alongside its renewable and energy storage assets. Together, these investments are expanding firm generation capacity at a time when states like West Bengal require reliable electricity to sustain industrial growth.
The Salboni Phase I (2×800 MW), entails an investment of approximately ₹16,000 crore. Construction commenced in April 2025 for the 1,600 MW ultra-supercritical project, which is fully secured under a 25-year Power Purchase Agreement with West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL).
The Salboni plant project is also expected to create over 2,000 direct and indirect jobs while encouraging local sourcing and skill development. JSW Group is also developing a 2,000-acre industrial park in Salboni, creating an integrated industrial ecosystem that extends the project's impact beyond power generation.
Salboni is also being developed using ultra-supercritical technology, which improves efficiency and lowers emissions compared to conventional coal-based plants. Supported by domestic coal allocation under the SHAKTI B (IV) policy, the plant combines higher efficiency with greater fuel security, contributing to a more resilient power system.
India’s growing power demand requires an energy mix that balances renewable expansion with thermal generation. Alongside projects like Salboni, JSW Energy is accelerating investments in solar, wind, hydro, and energy storage to build a diversified portfolio capable of delivering power throughout the day.
This integrated approach is reflected in the Company’s Strategy 3.0 roadmap, which targets 30 GW of generation capacity and 40 GWh of energy storage by 2030. Nearly 70% of this portfolio is expected to come from renewable sources, reinforcing JSW Energy’s commitment to expanding clean energy without compromising grid reliability.
Beyond generation, JSW Energy is evolving into an integrated energy company with investments spanning energy storage, green hydrogen, and energy products and services. By combining these capabilities with thermal assets like Salboni, the Company is building a flexible power network that supports India's decarbonisation and energy security goals.
Once operational, the Salboni Thermal Power Plant will become a key source of dependable electricity for West Bengal’s expanding industrial and commercial sectors.
