Waste Management

Internal waste audits are conducted across our operational locations to identify opportunities for improving waste management performance. In addition, external waste management audits are planned across operational locations during FY26.

As part of our Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL) Programme, we conduct periodic waste audits across our operations, including reviews of waste records, facility inspections, and assessments of waste streams, to identify major sources of waste generation and opportunities for waste reduction, reuse, and recycling. Our major thermal power plants at Ratnagiri, Barmer, and Vijayanagar have achieved Platinum ZWTL certification, with more than 95-99% of total waste diverted from landfill, and are subject to annual surveillance audits by the certifying agency.

The Company also allocates technical and workforce resources towards research and development (R&D), innovation and the implementation of waste-minimisation and waste-to-value solutions. Innovations implemented during the reporting year include converting bottom ash and mill rejects into supplementary fuel, improving the reliability and efficiency of fly-ash handling systems, and commissioning a 5 TPD solid waste management facility at Sholtu. Because ash constitutes a significant portion of our waste, we have committed to achieving 100% utilization of fly ash. Other waste materials are minimal in quantity and are either recycled, reused, or disposed of through authorized agencies in accordance with regulatory guidelines. As part of our innovative approach, we have built a state-of-the-art ash silo at our Ratnagiri plant with a capacity of 45,000 metric tonnes, the largest in India and among the biggest in Asia  to effectively manage and ensure complete fly ash utilization.

We strive to maximize the reuse and recycling of waste across our operations and minimize the disposal of both hazardous and non-hazardous waste to landfill.

We conduct trainings on energy efficiency, waste reduction, water efficiency management programs for our employees to raise awareness of energy, water and waste.

Hazardous Waste Management Performance

During FY 2025-26, the Company recycled/reused 286.998 metric tonnes of hazardous waste and disposed of 1.1927 metric tonnes of hazardous waste through incineration (without energy recovery), against a hazardous waste disposal target of 1.25 metric tonnes. No hazardous waste was landfilled, incinerated with energy recovery, otherwise disposed of, or managed through an unknown disposal method during the reporting period. All hazardous waste was managed through authorized facilities in accordance with applicable regulatory requirements. The hazardous waste data is subject to independent third-party assurance by Bureau Veritas (India) Pvt. Ltd. in accordance with ISAE 3000.
